Darts Heroes Slot (featuring Taylor, van Gerwen, Anderson, van Barneveld and Russ Bray)

Darts-themed slots generally all follow the same design. Much of the imagery found in each release is similar, too. However, with Darts Heroes, Stakelogic has managed to come up with something totally revolutionary and new. Their darts slot is quite unlike anything that has preceded it and is borderline themed on superheroes as much as the famous pub game.

Being unconventional in terms of its imagery and how it is played is something of a double-edged sword and a gamble for this game. On the one hand, Darts Heroes may be too much of a step into the dark and stray too far wide of the generic darts theme that people love. However, on the other, it could be the breath of fresh air that fans of darts slots are looking for. Whether Darts Heroes proves to be a hit could depend on which side of the coin you fall on. With that in mind, let’s dive into the game in our review of Darts Heroes.

Betting

Darts Heroes features the industry-standard 5-reel and 25-line gaming structure found in countless other slots across the net. Stakelogic doesn’t allow players to tinker with those paylines, but coin values and the number of coins staked per line are very much adjustable. Those coin denominations stretch from a penny up to 20p, while as many as 10 coins can be bet per payline. A typical bet on Darts Heroes is, therefore, going to cost anything from a floor bet of 25p a turn up to a ceiling bet of £50 a game.

The wagering range, as expressed in Darts Heroes, should cater to most players’ needs, whether they favour petite or costly bets. Released in May 2019, the Stakelogic slot has an RTP (return to player) rate of 96.06% and is a medium to high variance game.

Prizes

The symbols in this allegedly darts-themed slot are anything but conventional. At the lower end of the slot’s paytable, the 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace playing card symbols can dole out wins which range from five times a total bet up to 100x a stake. Also included in the game gemstone symbols and these rock icons provide more considerable wins.

Landing three to five of the blue, green, purple or orange gemstone icons on a payline will dish out wins worth anything from twenty times a bet, up to a more prosperous win of 250x a total stake. The non-progressive jackpot in the somewhat volatile release is set to a thousand times a bet and is paid out when five of the slot’s title logo appears on a payline.

Unlike other darts slots, the best-paying icon is not considered a special symbol in any other way. There are other icons which can dole out special features, so let’s look at those next.

Special Features

Wild symbols: Wild symbols can appear as the four main characters in the game, the titular darts heroes. They are typically stacked three symbols high and can be nudged, too. Should only part of a wild symbol appear on a reel, it may be possible to nudge the reel, gently coaxing the wild into view. As the reels only display three rows of symbols, any stacked wild which is nudged down will effectively become an expanding wild, covering an entire reel. Wild symbols can only replace standard paying icons, not other special symbols.

Scatter/bonus symbols: These symbols appear as dartboards. They only spring up on the first, third and fifth reels. Players are required to land them on all three reels at once to activate a free spin bonus round. There are four very different free spin bonuses which can be won via these symbols. Each has its own volatility level, so choose wisely.

The Power Free Spins bonus: A medium variance round, it promises a total of 8 free spins. When a wild appears, a Spawning Wilds feature comes into play. This transforms one of the slot’s standard paying icons into a wild, but the icons only appear on Darts Heroes’ second, third and fourth reels. This feature can be retriggered with more scatter icons.

The Mighty Mike Free Spins bonus: The second free spin round also offers medium volatility gameplay. In this round, 12 spins are doled out to players. Wild symbols can expand to cover a 2×2 spot on the reels in this round. They only appear on the second and fourth reels. Once more, further free spins can be won.

The Flying Scotsman Free Spins bonus: The only low variance free spin option in the game; this feature offers 15 free spins. When wilds appear in this round, they will transform any of the slot’s reel (all five of them) into wild reels. As with the other two features, additional free spins can be triggered via scatters.

Barney’s Free Spins bonus: Barney’s free game feature is the only highly volatile free spin option in Darts Heroes. Just ten free spins are offered to players in this feature. Any wilds which appear on the slot’s five reels during this round will become sticky for the entirety of the feature. However, thanks to this good fortune, no extra free spins can be won once the bonus commences.

Final thoughts

Darts Heroes is something entirely different to what you may be used to seeing or indeed expect from a darts-themed slot. As mentioned, this Stakelogic slot will likely divide the crowd. Some will feel as though the game isn’t really related to darts at all. Others will find it an interesting take on a sometimes-predictable genre of slots. Whichever way you feel about the theme, you are unlikely to find its features dull or boring, though.

Players have four free spin bonuses to choose from, each offering something radically different based on the volatility level which suits your style of gameplay. More than generous prizes, cheap enough bets, and mobile-friendly gameplay also helps this slot stand out. For those reasons alone, it is not unreasonable to call Darts Heroes a hit.
