World Champ Anderson Re-signs with Unicorn Darts
World Champion Gary Anderson has set his sights on a history-making treble to celebrate signing a new contract with Unicorn.
The Scot has penned a new deal which will take the partnership with Unicorn to the 10 year mark and he is aiming for a third consecutive World Championship crown to celebrate.
“It is no coincidence that I have produced the best darts of my life since joining up with Unicorn in 2011. I was the nearly man. Well, now I’m not. To win back-to-back World Championship titles has been a huge achievement. To win three on the spin is the ultimate,” he said.
“People talk about Michael van Gerwen. He is in great form but if he was the main man, he would have two World Championships to his name! I enjoy playing Michael. There is always added spice and hopefully it will be a great rivalry over the coming years,” the Scot added.
“But for me, this is the toughest era in the history of the sport. Taylor, Lewis, Wright, Wade, Barneveld etc and add to that all the fantastic young players breaking through and you can see why it means so much to win two World Championships. It has never been harder to win big tournaments. It is a golden era for darts.”
“Unicorn was the final piece in the jigsaw for me. I have always received fantastic support. It is a family and I want to achieve a lot more for them as well.”
Anderson is without doubt one of the greatest players in the history of the sport. Those back-to-back World crowns in 2015 and 2016, when he beat Phil Taylor and Adrian Lewis in the Alexandra Palace finals, have etched his name in darts folklore.
Unicorn Managing Director Edward Lowy is delighted to see the partnership continue for many years.
“That Gary should put together back-to-back World titles is testament to this ‘Great Scot’. An on-form Gary Anderson is an unstoppable force of nature on the oche and we are thrilled the partnership with Unicorn has been so fruitful.”
“I remember joking with Gary when he joined us back in 2011 as a Maestro Premier, that our World Champion category is the easiest to join – after all, you only have to win one match!”
In a little over a year, Anderson has won four ‘Majors’ adding the Premier League and Players Championship titles to his World Championship triumphs and he remains one of the most popular players with a huge global darting fan base.
Anderson steps up the defence of his Premier League crown on home soil on Thursday with a big double-header against Adrian Lewis and Peter Wright in Glasgow.
