Ladbrokes World Championships; Some Thoughts from The Power!
Well you’ve hopefully read my small humble preview on the upcoming world darts championships – with some thoughts on the major players and high quality outsiders who I think will make an impact. Don’t forget we also are running a competition to win tickets for Tuesday 18th evening session, you’ve got very little time to be in the running for that – so ENTER NOW!
Well don’t just take my word on things… when you can hear from the guvnor himself, Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor, as he speaks exclusively about the event and some of the players! Thanks to Ladbrokes for these exclusive Phil Taylor quotes and check out the darts section of their news site for more previews as well as features throughout the tournament.
The words from the Power himself, exclusively at Darts, Beers & Cheers!
How do you prepare for the worlds…
Hard practise and a lot of rest. It’s important to make sure you’re well rested. I’ll probably be doing 3-4 hours a day in the build up to the worlds. I probably have a couple of hours in the morning, a couple in the afternoon, probably fall asleep for an hour, because you practise properly you get tired, your eyes get tired. I’ll watch a bit of TV, have a bit of dinner, nod off and then have another little throw in the night time.
Brimming with confidence after winning in Minehead…
I’m alright, I’m alright. I’m very relaxed. I’m not worried about it. I think they’re more worried about me than I’ll be worried about them.
On Ally Pally…
It’s a great venue. When we first started playing there it was awesome. It’s massive. Massive stage. Massive venue. It’s a lovely atmosphere there.
On the some of the main title rivals….
James Wade…
James has been struggling a little bit at the minute because he’s had health problems. So he’s not been playing too well, but I’m sure he’ll be ready for the world championships. He didn’t perform too brilliantly in the last two tournaments, but that doesn’t mean a scrap of difference really. He’s had a couple of weeks now to get ready.
Adrian Lewis…
He’s going to be a tough cookie to beat. Everyone’s saying he hasn’t done a great deal this year, but he seems to bring it out at the right time and he’s got extra incentive this year. I think he’s going to be nervous. I think the first round is going to be tough for him, but I’m sure he’ll get through.
Michael van Gerwin…
He’s an absolutely bloody lunatic. But he’s playing the darts of his life and he sat and cried the other day when he got beat, so he’ll be going back and practising hard, but you never know with Michael. He’s a bit hit and miss. He’s a bit of a Ronnie O’Sullivan really.
Barney…
Barnie will be Barney. He’ll be solid. Good player is Barnie.
Said after the worlds last year that you had 2-3 years left in the sport…still the plan?
I set the target at 55, but then Barry Hearn the manager has signed a five-year contract so he’s said I can’t retire until I’m 57 now and if signs another one then I’ll be 58 when I retire. God knows what’s going to happen with him! [laughs]
Thanks to the one and only Phil Taylor for talking to my friends at Ladbrokes, who of course are the main sponsors of the historic world championships event.
