Ethereum Releases Final Specifications for ETH 2.O Version 0.1

Ethereum releases ETH 2.0 spec version 0.1, which centres on the integration of IETF BLS standards, as well as minor cleanups and optimizations as part of the profound and much-anticipated reorganization of files and directories in this final release. 

 Ethereum 2.0 Coordinator, Danny Ryan, said that the V.O.10.0 marks a Phase 0 stable target for multi-client testnets as well as security reviews. Further revisions are expected in two or three months after feedback from the reviews of clients and security experts.

The release of the new Ethereum 2.0 specifications comes a month after Ethereum Foundation’s Vitalik Buterin proposed merging eth1 and eth2 to accelerate migration into the beacon chain.

Final Release Marks Crucial Step Towards Eth 2.0 Full Launch 

The changes made in the final release were mostly done to signature standards and termed as generally backward compatible and straightforward to integrate:

“This release also contains a deep and much-needed reorganization of files/directories. The previous spec file groupings using phase number prefixes unsustainable, now files are nicely grouped into fork-based directories.”

Many eth 2.0 clients have had to restart their client-specific testnets since changes to beacon chain were finalized. It remains unclear how many of them have been able to integrate those changes fully.  

Eth 2.0 clients and coders have been waiting on audit reports from the ongoing audit of deposit contract and last year’s changes to the beacon chain design, before planning the launch of any multi-client testnet. 

The new release, according to Vitalik Buterin, will be the version that will go to audit and form the base for the multi-client testnet. 

Ethereum 2.0 Final Release Date In Sync with Proposed Date for Ethereum 2.0 Genesis Block

Researcher at Ethereum foundation Justin drake suggested last month that the launch of the Ethereum genesis block happen on 30 July, which coincides with Ethereum’s 5th birthday.

The launch would have to follow a multi-client testnet of the final release of eth 2.0, which should run for three months without reboot or downtime. The eth 2.0 which is scheduled for revisions after two or three months will have enough time for a debugging and second phase runtime before July:

“My hope is that such a stable multi-client testnet will be deployed in Q1. With a 3-month stability requirement, we’d be looking at Q2 launch at the earliest.”

Ethereum network migration process will introduce new concepts to the Ethereum community, including Proof of Stake, Sharding, and a New Virtual Machine (eWASM). The process will occur in six long term phases to begin after the launch of Beacon chain in early 2020 as part of phases 1 and 2, which are scheduled to happen in 2020 and 2021.
